Pronatal policies and reproductive rights
From Iran and China to Hungary and Poland, concern about stagnant or reducing population has been invoked as a justification for restrictions on reproductive rights, from abortion access to contraception availability and SRE. The issue of demographic “decline” has even been invoked in anti-abortion advocacy in the US. A combination of formal policies, informal restrictions, political rhetoric and social pressure are being deployed to influence or limit women’s reproductive rights and bodily autonomy.
Small grant support to grassroots projects
Since 2018, Population Matters has provided financial support to independent, indigenous grassroots family planning, education and gender equality projects through our Empower to Plan crowdfunding platform. Projects are community initiated and led, and diverse in purpose and geographic location – from Scotland to Uganda and Wales to Afghanistan. Grants have traditionally been very small, usually between £2,000 and £6,000. With a primary focus on empowering women through healthcare and family planning, they have also brought additional economic and environmental benefits to the communities supported.
Population Matters is a UK-based, international campaigning charity, promoting positive, voluntary solutions which empower people to choose their family size, to accelerate progress towards achieving the Sustainable Development Goals. We are committed to all the principles of the ICPD Programme of Action. Population Matters promotes recognition of the importance of family planning and reproductive health and rights across policy fields including environmental protection and resilience, global justice and sustainable economic development, and challenges obstacles to the exercise of those rights. Population Matters directly supports independent small-scale family planning and women’s empowerment projects through our Empower to Plan programme.
