ICFP 2025 Sets New Record for Abstract Submissions

May 22, 2025

The International Conference on Family Planning (ICFP) has always represented more than just a convening; it’s a movement, a platform, and a community. As we approach ICFP 2025 in Bogotá, Colombia, this movement is stronger, more diverse, and more inclusive than ever before.

We’re proud to share that ICFP 2025 has received a record-breaking 5,174 abstracts, the highest in the conference’s history.

This milestone isn’t just about numbers—it’s a reflection of the global family planning and reproductive health community’s resilience, innovation, and collective commitment to advancing equity.

A Truly Global Response

Abstracts came in from across the world from over 125 countries, with the top ten contributing countries being:

  1. United States 🇺🇸
  2. Nigeria 🇳🇬
  3. India 🇮🇳
  4. Kenya 🇰🇪
  5. Uganda 🇺🇬
  6. Pakistan 🇵🇰
  7. Colombia 🇨🇴
  8. Ethiopia 🇪🇹
  9. Bangladesh 🇧🇩
  10. Burkina Faso 🇧🇫

This diverse representation underscores ICFP’s global footprint and the continued relevance of SRHR dialogue across all regions.

Language Inclusivity Breakthroughs

For the first time, ICFP accepted abstracts in Spanish, and the results speak volumes about global engagement:

  • 78.86% submitted in English
  • 11.83% in Spanish
  • 9.32% in French

The number of French submissions also increased to 612 abstracts in total, representing a 52% rise from 2022.

Youth and New Voices Take the Stage

In alignment with our theme, “Equity Through Action: Advancing Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights For All,” ICFP continues to prioritize youth involvement and leadership.

This year, over 35% of abstract submitters are considered youth according to the African Union definition of 35 and under.

We also observed strong engagement from Latin America, with 225 abstracts (5.29%) utilizing data from Colombia, the host country for 2025. Colombia ranked just behind the top six countries in terms of submission volume, making it one of the most represented countries among submitters.

What the World is Talking About

The top three most popular tracks this year reflect the pressing priorities in our field:

1. Adolescents and Youth – 890 abstracts
2. Equity Through Action (conference theme) – 881
3. Access, Integration, Quality, and Technology – 850

A notable development: our new track on Overlooked Areas in SRHR debuted with 268 abstract submissions.

Program Focus and Strategic Direction

The distribution of abstract categories reflects a healthy balance across the ecosystem of SRHR work:

  • 47.73% focused on Research
  • 40.43% on Programs & Best Practices
  • 11.84% on Advocacy and Accountability

This mix reflects the interconnected approaches required to drive sustainable change, grounded in evidence, informed by practice, and amplified through advocacy.

Moving Forward with Purpose

In a time of funding cuts, shifting geopolitical realities, and deep-seated systemic inequities, ICFP remains committed, and we need your support.

The record-breaking response to this year’s call for abstracts shows that our community remains not only intact but reinvigorated.

As we prepare to gather in Bogotá this November, the ICFP Secretariat reaffirms its commitment to equitable access.

We are actively expanding funding opportunities for individuals with limited resources, including those who’ve lost institutional support.

Whether you’re an early-career researcher, a grassroots advocate, or a seasoned policymaker, your work matters, your voice matters. And this conference will reflect that.

Let’s build a future grounded in justice, equity, and action, together.
