Bogotá, Colombia In August 2025, the Family Planning News Network (FPNN) led an unforgettable reporting trip across Colombia to bring the global sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) community closer to the Latin American and Caribbean (LAC) region ahead of ICFP 2025 in Bogotá this 1–6 November.

The trip gave 12 international journalists the chance to experience Colombia’s diverse realities, challenges, and innovations—and to document and share these stories with the world. From deserts to dense jungles, vibrant cities to the sparkling Caribbean coast, Colombia is bold, unique, and alive with communities driving change every day. The country offers poignant lessons for the global SRHR field—especially now, as rights are rolled back, funding landscapes shift, and defending SRHR grows ever more urgent.

A Region of “Acceleration, Equity, and Resilience”

The FPNN Colombia Reporting Trip was made possible thanks to the tireless work of ICFP 2025 co-hosts— Profamilia, Fundación Valle del Lili, the William H. Gates Sr. Institute, and the Government of Colombia—as well as our partners at UNFPA Colombia, and the FP2030 LAC Hub.

This 10-day journey began and ended in Bogotá, the dynamic capital city where ICFP 2025 will soon welcome thousands of SRHR researchers, advocates, and professionals from around the world. To kick it off, we took part in a guided tour of the city—exploring its rich history and its growing role as a hub for health, human rights, and journalism.

In a press briefing hosted by ICFP 2025 co-host and Colombia’s leading SRHR organization, Profamilia, several of Colombia’s top leaders in the field offered the international community a chance to grasp the full scope of SRHR efforts, challenges, and innovations across the country. Speakers highlighted how local leaders are tackling pressing issues, what lessons can be shared globally, and why the work of SRHR organizations is more critical than ever.

Key Speakers:

  • Marta Royo, Executive Director, Profamilia
  • Nelson Javier Restrepo Arango, Director of Human Rights and International Humanitarian Law, Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Colombia
  • Carolina Deik, First Lady of Bogotá
  • Luis Mora, Resident Representative, UNFPA Colombia
  • Martha Lucía Rubio Mendoza, Deputy Representative, UNFPA Colombia

Setting the Stage for Colombia’s SRHR Landscape

At a time when SRHR is under threat worldwide, hosting ICFP in Bogotá sends a powerful message: we’re moving forward, not back. For the first time, ICFP comes to LAC—a region defined by strong civil society and youth movements. Colombia stands out as a leader, from landmark rulings on abortion rights to bold youth advocacy and the enduring work of our partners and co-hosts.
