Witness Firsthand How Sexual and Reproductive Health is Being Shaped in Colombia

The ICFP Secretariat is proud to offer four site visits in the Bogotà area for ICFP delegates on November 1st, 2025. Read the information below and sign-up by October 27 to secure your spot on the site visit. All of the site visits have a transportation fee associated with them, except for the visit to the Profamalia clinic, which is offered free of charge. Visit to Jorge Eliécer Gaitán Hospital

A national benchmark in sexual health, reproductive rights, and humanized care

Visit organized by: Secretary of Health of Bogota with the support of Fecolsog Location: Carrera 4A Este No. 5–20

General Overview In the heart of Bogotá, Jorge Eliécer Gaitán Hospital has become a symbol of transformation and leadership in upholding sexual and reproductive rights in Colombia. Part of the Centro Oriente Integrated Health Services Network, the hospital represents a model of comprehensive, ethical, and deeply humanized care — where every life story is met with respect, empathy, and clinical excellence. This Hospital has played a key role in shaping Colombia’s public health history:

  • In 2010, the Centro Oriente Sub-network pioneered the first Voluntary Termination of Pregnancy (VTP) procedures in compliance with Constitutional Court Ruling C-355 of 2006.
  • In 2012, it performed the first VTP at an advanced gestational age in a public hospital in Colombia.
  • To date, it has supported more than 12,300 VTP cases, 46% of which involved pregnancies beyond 20 weeks — establishing itself as a national reference center for high-complexity cases.

  • The Youth Center, a pioneering space that provides education and youth-friendly health services.
  • Our Program for the Prevention and Care of Unintended Pregnancy, including the telemedicine abortion initiative — MIA: My body, my autonomy.
  • The Trans Health Program, designed to ensure respectful, stigma-free, rights-based healthcare.
  • Surgical services, including vasectomy and innovative procedures developed by our medical specialists.
  • The clinical laboratory, offering vaccination, diagnostic testing, and counseling on STIs and PrEP.

Visit to Visit to Casa de la Juventud de Los Martires (Los Martires Youth Center)

Day: November 1st

Time: 9:00 a.m. – 10:30 a.m.

Duration of the visit: approximately 1 hour and 30 minutes.

Group Size: 40 participants

Number of visits per day: 1

Languages: Spanish / English (simultaneous interpretation available)

Cost: The transportation cost for this visit ranges from $8 to $10 dollars, which must be paid in cash on November 1 when boarding the bus.

Overview

Los Mártires Youth Center is part of the district network of Youth Centers, a strategy of the Social Integration Secretary of Bogota aimed at strengthening young people’s life projects through the comprehensive development of their skills, promoting their participation in the social, cultural, and productive spheres of the city, from a differential perspective of rights, prevention, and gender.

These spaces are consolidated as environments that foster autonomy, participation, and youth expression, offering spaces for socio-occupational and psychosocial guidance, artistic and cultural activities, and training processes in sexual and reproductive rights, prevention of psychoactive substance use, prevention of gender-based violence, and mental health.

Purpose of the visit:

To raise awareness of Youth Centers as safe spaces for dialogue, education, and the promotion of sexual and reproductive rights, highlighting their role in strengthening young people’s life plans through educational strategies aimed at developing social-emotional skills and autonomous, informed decision-making.

What to expect:

The visit will include a tour of three themed stations that showcase specific experiences and results related to the promotion of sexual and reproductive rights through youth action:

  1. Gallery – “Menstrual Art” Contest

Exhibition of illustrations created by young people as part of Andean Week, focusing on menstrual rights and demystifying menstruation. The tour will present the contest experience and its contribution to cultural transformation on the subject.

  1. Sharing the results of the contest “Youth Initiatives for the Promotion of Sexual and Reproductive Rights”

Presentation of the two winning groups—in the established and emerging categories—who will share their projects, methodologies, and lessons learned regarding sexual and reproductive rights.

  1. Experience in training processes

Sharing successful experiences developed in different Youth Centers, including results of training processes and the creation of games and educational materials on sexual and reproductive rights. These experiences reflect the capacity of Youth Centers to promote comprehensive development and the construction of life projects with a rights-based approach.

Fertility Regulation and Reproductive Autonomy

Kennedy Hospital, located in southwestern Bogotá, stands as a reference point in the promotion of sexual and reproductive rights. Its Fertility Regulation Program ensures that everyone can make free and informed decisions about parenthood and life projects, with access to reliable information, specialized counseling, and safe contraceptive methods.

During the visit, participants will learn how the hospital integrates clinical care with educational and psychosocial strategies, ensuring an approach grounded in rights, gender equity, and autonomy. This experience provides a close look at how Bogotá’s public health system embeds sexual and reproductive health across all levels of care — from prevention to post-obstetric follow-up.

What Visitors Will Experience

  • Guided tour of obstetrics and gynecology services, including delivery rooms, hospitalization, and counseling areas.
  • Demonstration of the fertility regulation counseling process, emphasizing differential approaches and long-acting reversible contraception (LARC) such as implants and IUDs.
  • Technical discussion with nursing and risk management teams on monitoring, follow-up, and user continuity of care.
  • Examples of best practices in coordination with Health Benefit Plan Administrators (EAPBs) to ensure timely access to contraceptive methods.
